National Instruments PCI-7813 Digital Reconfigurable I/O Device

The National Instruments PCI-7813 (Part Number: 779370-01) is a Digital Reconfigurable I/O Device (RIO Device). This model has an integrated 3M Gate Virtex-II user programmable FPGA. This device supports custom decision making or supervisory that operates with hardware-timed reliability and accuracy. The NI PCI-7813 can be utilized in a variety of applications because it allows users to configure digital lines as times, counters, I/Os, PWM, or encoder inputs separately.

This RIO Device offers 160 digital I/Os. The FPGA utilized in this module has 28,672 flip-flops, 28,672 4-input LUTs, 96 multipliers (18 x 18), and 1,728 Kbits of embedded block RAM. With this model, it is possible to configure the power-up state of any of the digital I/O channels. This RIO Device offers 5 ns minimum sampling period, 25 ns minimum input pulse width, and 12.5 ns minimum output pulse width.

The digital lines incorporated in this model are TTL compatible and they support 3.3 V, 5 V logic levels.  The NI PCI 7813 device features an onboard clock as well. This integrated clock offers up to 40 MHz maximum clock rate.  The NI PCI-7813 Digital Reconfigurable I/O Device is designed to be used in any standard PCI expansion slot available on a Windows based host machine. In typical conditions, this device draws 850 mA typical at +3.3 VDC (±5%). The user can have this RIO Device operated in a variety of configurations and the operating temperature range is 0 °C to 55 °C.

PCI-7813 Mature Status has been announced by National Instruments, but will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.

National Instruments PCI-7813 Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Are you able to individually configure digital lines in the PCI-7813?

Answer: With LabView FPGA, the PCI-7813 allows you to individually configure the digital lines as inputs, outputs, counters, timers, and more.

Question: Why does my Windows software stop working a few minutes after starting with the PCI-7813?

Answer: If your Windows software stops working completely with the PCI-7813, it could be due to incompatibilities between the PCI-7813 and AER support. Disable the AER support on your computer, then check that the IRQs are assigned correctly to the device.

Question: Is there a way to export a trigger from a PCI 7813 to a PCI 5412 function generator?

Answer: To export a trigger from the PCI 7813 FPGA to the PCI 5412, create an FPGA I/O point for the RTSI lines and use a digital output operation in your FPGA VI to output your trigger across the RTSI bus.
