National Instruments 780178-01 CAN Interface Module

The high-speed Controller Area Network (CAN) interface module National Instruments 780178-01, also known as the NI-9853, is made for FPGA-based applications in CompactRIO systems. With the support of the LabVIEW FPGA Module, this module is conformal coated and can precisely manipulate CAN frames at the byte level. It performs well in low-level FPGA-based control and triggering applications. Because the 780178-01 is only compatible with CompactRIO systems, complex industrial automation and control applications can be seamlessly integrated.

In order to connect to a CAN bus, the 780178-01 has two 9-pin male D-Sub connectors. Signal integrity is ensured by connecting twisted-pair wires to the ports that support CAN_H and CAN_L signals. Furthermore, two common pins (COM) are included into each port, which are linked internally to the isolated reference of the module and function as the ground reference for CAN_H and CAN_L respective.

Key characteristics of the 780178-01 high-speed CAN interface include the Philips TJA 1041 transceiver and a maximum baud rate of 1 Mbps. The CAN_H and CAN_L bus lines can handle voltages ranging from -27 V DC to +40 V DC. For power supply, CAN1 requires a voltage range between +8 V DC to +25 V DC, while CAN0 does not have this requirement.

When powered by an external power source, the 780178-01 can withstand up to +30 V DC. Its maximum voltage range from port to COM is -27 V DC to +40 V DC. With a withstand capacity of 500 V RMS, as confirmed by a 5-second dielectric withstand test, the module's isolation features include continuous port-to-port and port-to-earth ground isolation of 60 V DC. Up to a height of 5,000 meters, these characteristics guarantee dependable performance in challenging conditions.

The 780178-01 has an efficient power consumption of 400 mW for receiving and 625 mW for transmitting in active mode. The power usage reduces to 25 µW when in sleep mode.
