National Instruments PXI-7358 Stepper/Servo Motion Controller Module
The National Instrument PXI-7358 (Part Number: 778540-08) Stepper/Servo Controller is the most effective NI motion controller in the PXI platform. With eight axes, this motion controller is suggested for a wide assortment of both simple and complex motion applications. The user can independently arrange every axis for stepper control or brushed servo control. This module additionally incorporates eight 16-bit-analog-to-digital converters for locally available information acquisition and a few advanced motion trajectories and triggering highlights.
This module offers +/- 10 V of voltage range, positive limit, negative limit, and programmable offset, 16 bits of resolution, a velocity range between 1 to 8,000,000 steps/s, +/- 1,200,000 steps/s of acceleration, +/- 256,000 revolutions of RPS/s range, a watchdog timeout between 63 or 256 rms, a voltage range between 0 to 5 V, an input low voltage of 0.8 V, an input high voltage of 2 V, and 100 mA at 5V of host. The device has 64 digital I/O channels.
To get started in using the PXI 7358, the following pieces of hardware are required:
- A computer equipped with a PXI or PCI slot
- The NI PXI 7358 motion controller
- The NI or a third-party drive and motor.
The NI device is run using the NI-Motion driver software which is compatible with software packages/application development environments (ADEs) such as LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, Microsoft Visual C++, or Microsoft Visual Basic, and the NI Motion assistant (which is optional).
The PXI-7358 motion controller incorporates buffered breakpoints for exact timing amongst motion and estimations or vision. Utilizing this element, the user can send a buffer of position breakpoints to the controller that trigger an advanced signal after achieving the positions in the support. Buffered breakpoints can trigger at rates as high as 2 kHz and for similarly spaced positions, the user can utilize periodic breakpoints to accomplish significantly higher rates of up to 4 MHz. With these periodic breakpoints, the user can supply a position modulus each time the position achieves the modulus position.
PXI-7358 Obsolete Status has been announced by National Instruments, but the motion controller will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.

National Instruments PXI-7358 Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Why does my stepper system using the NI PXI-7358 not move to the location that I have specified?
Answer: If your NI PXI-7358 stepper system does not move to the location specified, it usually means it has a higher resolution than the encoder.
Question: Is data acquisition built in to the PXI 7358?
Answer: The PXI 7358 has built-in data acquisition with 16-bit analog inputs.
Question: Can the ATI force/torque sensor be used with the PXI-7358?
Answer: The PXI-7358 needs a breakout to separate the pins that are the analog output pins of the torque sensor first, then you can use the PXI-7358 to connect them.
