National Instruments PCI-7356 Motion Controller Device
Featured with 64 Digital I/O Channels and 16-bit Input Resolution, the National Instruments PCI-7356 (Part Number: 778440-06) is a Brushed or Brushless, Servo and Stepper Motion Controller. This model supports controlling for as many as six axes of motion. The NI PCI-7356 comes with a powerful API that makes it simple and easy to program because all the configuration and motion control functions can be executed through a DLL.
This Motion Controller is fully compatible with PCI Local Bus Specifications and Standards Rev 2.2. Thus, the computer will perform most of the bus-related configurations automatically. In addition, it is not required to adjust jumpers for PCI bus-related configuration. The NI PCI-7356 can be used in any +3.3 V or +5 V PCI slot. This device has an ability to work with brushless servo drives that operate based on sinusoidal commutation.
When coupling to a brushless servo drive, the user will need only one DAC output per axis. When connecting to a brushed drive, this Motion Controller commutates the first two phases of the servo drive, whereas the drive itself determines the third one. Thus, two DAC outputs are utilized per axis in such cases. For the calculation of commutation values, users can have a Hall Effect sensor installed to determine the required commutation phase angle of any motor. However, it can also be done without the installation of Hall Effect sensors by a method called shake and wake. The NI PCI-7356 comes with an integrated 32-bit CPU, 16-bit ADC, and 16-bit DACs. It is equipped with 8 analog input and 8 analog output channels.
Each NI PCI-7356 requires:
-MID-7604 Stepper Motor Drive: 777936-01
-MID-7654 Servo Motor Drive: 778005-01 and 778005-05
-SHC68-C68-S 0.5 m Cable: 186380-0R5
-UMI-7774 Universal Motion Interface: 778558-01
-SHC68-C68-S 2 m Cable: 186380-02
The NI device weighs 0.25 lb, and measures 6.9 x 3.9 in. in physical dimensions. It is equipped with 2 68-pin female high-density VHDCI I/O connectors, has a power consumption of 18 W.
PCI-7356 End of Life Status has been announced by National Instruments, but will still be available for purchase and repairs by Apex Waves.

National Instruments PCI-7356 Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Can I plug the NI PCI-7356 motion controller card in a PCI-X slot?
Answer: For NI products, the double notch at the PCI connector always means it’s compatible with PCI-X, therefore the PCI-7356 motion controller can be used in the PCI-X slot.
Question: Can the PCI-7356 achieve feedback with hall effect sensors?
Answer: The PCI-7356 is not able to achieve feedback with hall effect sensors.
Question: Can the NI PCI-7356 create a time constraint for a specified amount of time?
Answer: The NI PCI-7356 cannot create a time constraint. When you define a motion, you need to define the number of steps or the position, not the time.
