National Instruments 780587-12 Fault Insertion Unit (FIU) Switch Module.

The National Instruments 780587-12 is a 7-Channel Fault Insertion Unit (FIU) Switch Module. It is also identified as PXIe-2512 module that is designed for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) applications and electronic reliability tests. It features feedthrough channels that can open or short to fault buses while simulating open or interrupted connections, shorts between pins, and shorts to battery voltages or ground. This functionality is important for validating control systems' integrity like engine control units (ECUs) and full authority digital engine controls (FADECs). The NI 780587-12 module supports a maximum switching voltage of 50 VDC or 30 V ACrms along with a maximum continuous current of 10 A per channel. It can handle a maximum pulsed current of 50 A for up to 600 microseconds, and its maximum switching power per channel is 500 W. The DC path resistance is typically 16 mΩ along with a maximum of 35 mΩ. This module also offers a bandwidth greater than 800 kHz in a 50 Ω system.

The NI module has an overcurrent detection limit of 10.5 A and a detection delay of 20 ms. The module’s dynamic performance is marked by a relay operate time of 8 µs (typical) and 35 µs (maximum). The relay offers unlimited life when operated within specified limits. The 780587-12 supports PXI trigger lines <0...7> for input triggers with a minimum pulse width of 150 ns and software-selectable output trigger pulse widths ranging from 1 µs to 62 µs. The 780587-12 FIU module uses FET relays and connects via 2 DSUB, 8-position, male connectors on the front panel. It requires power from PXI (3.3 V at 1.0 W and 5 V at 13.0 W) or PXI Express (+12 V at 14.7 W and 3.3 V at 1.4 W). Its dimensions are 21.6 cm × 4.1 cm × 13.0 cm and weighs 403 grams. The FIU unit operates within a temperature range of 0 °C to 50 °C and can be stored between -40 °C and 70 °C. It supports a relative humidity of 5% to 85% (non-condensing) and a maximum altitude of 2000 meters. It is designed for indoor use only. The 780587-12 unit meets several safety and EMC standards that include IEC 61010-1, EN 61010-1, UL 61010-1, CSA C22.2 No. 61010-1, EN 61326-1, CISPR 11, CISPR 22, and FCC Part 15B.
