National Instruments 780587-14 Fault Insertion Unit (FIU) Switch Module

The National Instruments 780587-14 is a 7-channel Fault Insertion Unit (FIU) switch module designed for hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) applications and electronic reliability testing. This module is also known as the PXIe-2514 unit. This module allows for the simulation of various fault conditions that include open circuits, short circuits between pins, shorts to battery voltages, and shorts to ground. It enables comprehensive validation of control systems like engine control units (ECUs) and full authority digital engine controls (FADECs).

Each channel of 780587-14 can handle a maximum switching voltage of 28 VDC or 19.8 V ACrms and a continuous current of up to 40 A in a single path or 25 A with multiple paths closed. It also supports pulsed currents up to 200 A for short durations (up to 1100 µs) that makes it suitable for high-stress testing environments. The maximum switching power per channel is capped at 1,120 W. This module features overcurrent detection with a limit of 41 A and a detection delay of 20 ms along with overtemperature protection circuitry. These safety features help prevent damage to the module during fault conditions. The module's dynamic characteristics include a typical relay operate time of 8 µs and a maximum of 35 µs along with an unlimited relay life when operated within specified limits.

The 780587-14 FIU module uses FET relays and has two DSUB connectors on the front panel. It requires a PXI chassis with power requirements of 3.3 V at 1.0 W and 5 V at 13.0 W, or a PXI Express chassis with 12 V at 14.7 W and 3.3 V at 1.4 W. The module weighs 513 g and has dimensions of 21.6 cm by 4.1 cm by 13.0 cm. It operates in temperatures ranging from 0 °C to 50 °C and can be stored in temperatures between -40 °C and 70 °C. The NI 780587-14 complies with various safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards that include IEC 61010-1, EN 61010-1, UL 61010-1, and CSA C22.2 No. 61010-1 for safety, and EN 61326-1, EN 55011, and FCC Part 15B for EMC.
