National Instruments 780109-01 1-Channel Waveform Generator

The National Instruments 780109-01 is a high performance single channel arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) designed for complex signal generation. It is also known as the PXIe-5442. It features a 16 bit DAC with a maximum sample rate of 100 MS/s that provides precise signal creation for a wide range of applications. The module is equipped with a digital upconverter (DUC) which allows for direct generation of intermediate frequency (IF) signals simplifying the signal chain in communication systems.

This waveform generator supports two main output paths: the Direct path and the Main path both of which are software-selectable. The Direct path is optimized for IF applications that offer full scale voltages ranging from 0.707 Vpk-pk to 1.00 Vpk-pk into a 50 Ω load. The Main path supports a broader voltage range from as low as 5.64 mVpk-pk to 2.00 Vpk-pk. The module's output impedance is selectable between 50 Ω and 75 Ω that ensures compatibility with different load conditions. The model weighs 405 g (14.3 oz) and has physical dimensions of 21.6 cm × 2.0 cm × 13.0 cm (8.5 in. × 0.8 in. × 5.1 in.).

The NI 780109-01 features advanced signal fidelity with a spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) reaching up to 87 dB depending on the frequency and path used. The device also incorporates a software selectable finite impulse response (FIR) filter with interpolation factors of 2, 4, or 8 which improves the effective sample rate and signal quality. An onboard 7 pole elliptical filter is available on the Main path for image suppression that ensures clean signal output across the passband.

This waveform generator offers multiple clocking options that include a high resolution mode with a sample rate resolution of 1.06 µHz and an external clock input supporting up to 105 MHz. The onboard phase locked loop (PLL) ensures accurate clock synchronization with an external reference. The module is designed to withstand rigorous operating environments with an operating temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C and compliance with military and industrial standards for shock and vibration. The module also meets various safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards.
