National Instruments 781911-01 Software Defined Radio Device

The National Instruments 781911-01 (USRP-2932) is a versatile software-defined radio (SDR) device designed for a wide range of communication applications such as Wi-Fi, WiMax and ISM band communications. It features a single input and output channel that is tunable through LabVIEW software using the NI-URSP instrument driver. Because of its wide frequency range (400 MHz to 4.4 GHz), it may be used with a variety of wireless communication systems.

The transmitter on the 781911-01 device operates with a frequency step of less than 1 kHz for fine tuning. It provides an output power ranging from 50 mW to 100 mW (17 dBm to 20 dBm) and its gain range extends from 0 dB to 31 dB adjustable in 0.5 dB steps. This flexibility makes it suitable for various signal strength requirements. The greatest instantaneous bandwidth supported by the device is either 40 MHz (8-bit sample width) or 20 MHz (16-bit sample width). The highest possible I/Q sampling rate for 16-bit samples is 25 MS/s, while the rate for 8-bit samples is 50 MS/s.

The 781911-01 model’s receiver also covers a frequency range from 400 MHz to 4.4 GHz and features a gain range from 0 dB to 31.5 dB with a 0.5 dB gain step. It supports a maximum input power of 0 dBm and features a noise figure of 5 dB to 7 dB. Like the transmitter, it supports a maximum real time bandwidth of 20 MHz for 16-bit samples and 40 MHz for 8-bit samples. Two channels with 14-bit resolution and a 100 MS/s sampling rate are provided by the receiver's ADC. With a maximum power consumption of 18 W, this software-defined radio device normally works between 12 and 15 W. It uses an external DC power source and features compact physical dimensions of 15.875 cm x 4.826 cm x 21.209 cm with a total weight of 1.193 kg.

The NI 781911-01 SDR also includes a GPS Disciplined Oscillator (GPSDO) for precise frequency control. The oscillator's frequency accuracy is 25 ppb when not tied to GPS, and increases to 10 ppb when it is. The device operates with an active antenna that requires 0.7 W (and 5 V) of power.
