Each channel of the NI 783589-01 module operates in complete isolation from earth ground and other channels. With isolation ratings of 480 Vrms between channels and 300 Vrms to earth, it is ideal for direct measurements of current at line voltages up to 277 V/480 V. However, this current input module is designed for AC measurements only and does not measure DC currents. When making frequency-specific measurements such as phasor measurements, harmonic analysis, or fundamental line frequency amplitude measurements, the DC value is ignored.
These measurements can be performed using algorithms provided by the National Instruments LabVIEW Electrical Power Suite. Although the NI 783589-01 cannot measure DC inputs, excessive DC components in the input currents will saturate the internal transformer and cause erroneous measurements. When using this device to measure current indirectly through a current transformer, the transformer blocks continuous DC currents from reaching the device inputs. However, temporary offsets of the AC signal can still occur.
